From fake news to filter bubbles, journalism has come under heavy scrutiny. Heads of state openly denounce media as enemies of the people. Transparency, quality and trust are on the agenda of every media house in the world.
“This is the time to stand up for independent journalism and it’s role for people and society. We want to create an open arena where the future of journalism will be in focus, discussed and celebrated. We want to invite to a truly important conversation. That’s why we now launch the Power of Journalism Day together with Tinius Trust”, says Rolv Erik Ryssdal, CEO of Schibsted Media Group.
The first Power of Journalism Day will be held May 31st in Oslo with invited guests from the media business, journalists and editors, politicians and opinion leaders. The event will be launched and supported by a social media campaign under the hashtag #powerofjournalism.
The defining theme for 2017 is “Trust” with its different perspectives and consequences. Amongst the speakers you find Bill Adair, the creator of PolitiFact, Jenna Pirog, the virtual reality editor for The New York Times and Schibsted’s own Torry Pedersen, chairman of Schibsted’s Media Houses in Norway and former publisher of VG:
“The outcome of the recent elections and the potential influence of fake news should act as a wakeup call for mainstream media to be more transparent and relevant. Therefore “Trust” is a highly relevant theme for the very first Power of Journalism Day. For Schibsted it is also an opportunity to share, learn and showcase some of the innovative journalism of high quality that is being created in our media houses and by others”, says Torry Pedersen.
“The Tinius Trust, main shareholder in Schibsted, is set to contribute to free and credible news media. This is more important than ever for society and democracy”, says Kjersti Løken Stavrum, CEO of Tinius Trust. “With Power of Journalism we want to empower everyone who supports and works for the value of journalism. This event is an important opportunity for us to contribute to spark lively debate and share insight on these matters”, she says.
Schibsted will for the 10th time also award the very best journalistic achievements from across the Group’s media houses in Norway and Sweden.
Schibsted Journalism Awards include prizes for Best Storytelling, Best Innovation and Best Scoop and the nominees will be presented during the Power of Journalism Day.
The Power of Journalism Day is by invitation but it’s content will be widely shared through webcast and social media, before, during and after the day itself. The social media campaign is being produced in house with VG TV and the event itself produced together with Z Event.
